It’s the week after Easter and I’m suffering from a decided lack of willpower when faced with all the leftover candy the bunny left at my house. I know it’s bad for me, but I can’t stop thinking about how much I like Jelly Bellies. Just like I know some music is bad for me, which brings us to today’s subject: The Archies.

How can a band made up of cartoon characters be a good thing? I don’t know, but I do know that I’ve had their song “Sugar, Sugar,” stuck in my head all morning as I’ve tried to resist the empty calories that are tempting me at every turn. It irritates me so much I just want to bite the ears off a chocolate bunny.

This song was among the biggest hits in the sub-genre dubbed “bubblegum pop” of the late 60s and early 70s. The infectious song went to number one in the Billboard charts in 1969 and marks the only time a fictional band has made it to the top. Listen at your peril–it will bore into your brain and get stuck there until ALL the Peeps and Cadbury eggs are gone.

  1. Great image. I totally agree, bubblegum pop is sticky and overly sweet.

  4. There she was, in my new high school sitting next to me in my World Lit class, my candy girl! Sugar, Sugar. 1969. How could I forget this song? Now I am singing it with jelly beans and thinking about her. What a trigger!

  5. Arghhhhhh!
Don't suggest these songs that bring back such syrupy memories!
Stomach aches, canker sores and dentists drilling into my life :P

  7. Oh my! I was a junior in high school, when the Archies started singing this song. My favorite lines are: I just can't believe the loveliness of loving you (I just can't believe it's true).

Ahh...I wonder if the boy of my dreams back then (yes, my dear husband, John, it was YOU!) would say "the loveliness of loving you" today. I love you, dear, John! And thanks for the walk down memory lane, Bren!

  8. This is a great song…it always makes me happy! :)I love how music has the power to brighten your day and pick you up when you’re down. I have been humming this song all day while studying and got it stuck in my friends head as well. She ended up buying it on iTunes and it’s been playing in our dorm ever since. Thank you for sharing and bringing a bit of sugar down to Abilene, Texas!

  9. I love Easter candy far too much and have had to resist the temptation of buying out every store's discounted leftovers to enjoy for the rest of the year! I think I'll just listen to this song instead, and perhaps even add it to my wedding reception playlist...
